Emotional 24 hours for Save Our Unique Landscape supporters
Mana whenua and supporters of the occupation at Ihumatao have had an emotional 24 hours. Located next to the Otuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve in Mangere, Ihumatao is a significant archaeological site on land considered wahi tapu, or sacred, by local hapu and iwi. The land - which was controversially earmarked for development by Fletchers - has been bought by the Government for just under 30-million dollars, and an agreement has been signed with the Kiingitanga to decide its future. Stacey Bishop, a supporter of Save Our Unique Landscape, told reporter Te Aorewa Rolleston it is a step forward but it is not the end of the generations-long fight.
