Scientists photograph rare ginkgo-toothed beaked whale
Scientists believe they have taken the first photograph of the extremely rare ginkgo-toothed beaked whale off the Northland coast. Everything that is known about the species thus far has been from strandings and they've never been sighted off New Zealand before. The encounter took place on the sixth day of a marine life survey by the the Far Out Ocean Research Collective. University of Otago teaching fellow Marta Guerra, who's a trustee of the collective, spoke to our reporter Ella Stewart about the extraordinary experience.
