NZ Olympic Comm is disappointed by Japan's ban on fans

The head of the New Zealand Olympic Committee says that a decision by Japan to ban overseas supporters and fans from July's games due to the Covid-19 pandemic will be a big blow to friends and families of the athletes heading to Tokyo for the Olympic and Paralympic Games . It comes as New Zealand's Olympic team awaits the government's decision on whether they will be included in the "national significance" category for the Covid-19 jab, which would let them jump the queue for the vaccine. New Zealand Olympic Committee chief executive Kereyn Smith spoke with our producer Matthew Theunissen, who started by asking whether the decision to ban overseas supporters and fans came as a surprise.
