NZers stuck in India feel abandoned by govt
New Zealanders stuck in India are feeling abandoned by the Government after all flights were suspended from midnight last night. First Up has been contacted by numerous people desperate to come home who now have to wait for the travel ban to lift as Covid 19 infects up to 150,000 people a day in India. One of them is Auckland woman Scentory Te Kura, who travelled to India with her two 5-year-old children in 2019 after their father was deported and they needed to get proof of the relationship. She spoke with our producer Matthew Theunissen. New Zealand resident Vikas Sharma travelled to India to get married just before the pandemic struck last year. After trying to book a place in MIQ for five months he finally secured a spot and was supposed to arrive in the country today. Rounak Shrivastava isn't a resident so wouldn't have been eligible for MIQ anyway, but his case highlights that it's not only New Zealanders desperate to get into the country. His wife is doing her Masters at the University of Waikato and he was about to join her having secured a one year visa, when the pandemic hit.
