The government yesterday anounced a $562 million law and order package, which it says will increase police numbers, tackle gang violence, and extend rehabilitation programmes. It will also be used to establish a new police firearms unit to target gun crime, and to help businesses protect themselves against ram raids, which have become increasingly prevelant recently. Our producer Matthew Theunissen discussed the package with University of Canterbury sociologist Dr Jarrod Gilbert, who's one of New Zealand's leading experts on gangs and crime.
