Consumer NZ hopes new supermarket rules will impact shoppers
The government has introduced a raft of new rules for supermarkets in an attempt to counter soaring food prices. It follows the Commerce Commissions market study into New Zealand supermarkets, which found that competition in the grocery sector is not working well for consumers. The changes, announced yesterday by Minister of Commerce and Consumer affairs David Clark, include compulsory unit pricing on groceries and the introduction of an industry regulator. Dr Clark says a supermarkets' hold over wholesalers makes it difficult for would-be competitiors to offer any competition. Nathan Rarere asked the Chief Executive of Consumer NZ John Duffy whether these measures will have any real impact for shoppers?
