Weather update from South Island on overnight winds, rain

Extreme weather is sweeping through parts of the South Island bringing with it heavy rain and severe gales of up to 150 km per hour. There are severe weather warnings in place for several regions including Canterbury, south of Otira and the headwaters of Otago lakes and rivers.
