Willis: National approves of public holiday to mourn Queen

From First Up, 5:49 am on 13 September 2022

New Zealanders will have an unexpected public holiday on Monday the 26th of September to mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. It will coincide with a state memorial service to be held in in Wellington's Cathedral of St Paul, which will be televised. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the decision to hold the one-off holiday gives New Zealanders an opportunity to reflect on the Queen's life of service, and is in line with similar holidays in the UK and Australia. The Act Party and Business NZ have voiced their opposition to the holiday which -- they say -- businesses can't afford. Our reporter Felix Walton hit the streets of Auckland to find out what people think of the decision. Nathan Rarere discussed this with National's deputy leader Nicola Willis leader in our weekly chat. But first, he asked her about the traffic light system that was scrapped yesterday.
