Coromandel's State Highway 25 between Opoutere and Hikuai was restricted to one lane and light vehicles only overnight, after a major slip deteriorated further this week eating into the road. For those of you unfamiliar with the area, that road connects Waihi and Whangamata with the tourist towns of Tairua, Pauanui and Whitianga. Mayor Len Salt told Checkpoint last night the region is just one weather event away from being almost completely isolated. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins is due to visit Thames today. The Tairua Care and Friendship Club is made up of volunteers who help transport people to hospital. Marnie Goodman is one of the volunteers. Nathan Rarere asked her how people were being impacted by the road closures.
