Students support teachers striking but is a challenge

Secondary school teachers could continue rolling strikes for better pay, after three days of bargaining between the teachers' union and the Ministry of Education failed to reach a settlement. Now the Employment Relations Authority has stepped in, and is recommending the PPTA and the Ministry consider independent arbitration. It also wants teachers to stop industrial action in the meantime. But the union says strikes will keep going, while they look at the recommendations. Meanwhile... a group of students in Poneke has started an Instgram page called "Back our Kaiako" - to throw their support behind the teachers. One of those involved is a year 13 student from Aotea College in Porirua. Kay told our reporter Leonard Powell that being able to get higher NCEA marks with fewer days in the classroom has been a challenge.
