In election year, politicians are already trotting out the issue of youth violence.
Figures show young people who've been exposed to violence at home are more likely to hurt others. But more than half of the young adults affected are bucking those expectations, many without the help of official agencies.
So how are they doing it? Cherie McQuilkin looks at how some young people are finding another way out.
