10:18 Minimum wage increase necessary as inflation peaks
Statistics New Zealand data released today showed that Inflation was 5.9% annually, its highest rate since June 1990. Inflation is being driven by the price of building materials, rents, fuel, and the price of second-hand cars. The price of petrol rose 30% annually and the price of purchasing a new house rose 16% in the latest data. Council of Trade Unions Chief Economist Craig Renney says "Today's inflation data shows that increases in the minimum wage are both necessary and desirable"

A new discovery in the night sky has stargazers buzzing with excitement. Astronomers have located a mysterious pulsing object which is emitting a radio wave. Experts are predicting it may be a new class of star with an ultra-powerful magnetic field. 10:33 Yellow-eyed penguins receive lifeline
Penguin Place is a private conservation reserve in Otago, set up 36 years ago to help save the yellow-eyed penguin from extinction. Today Conservation Minister Kiri Allan announced the centre will be receiving $633,000 in funding through the Government's Jobs for Nature scheme. Joining us is Rehabilitation manager Jason Van Zanten who says the assistance Penguin Place gives to Otago Peninsula's yellow-eyed penguins was vital to their survival.
