10:32 Great white shark targets teen surfer
A great white shark targeted a 14 year old surfer in the Bay of Plenty earlier this week and it's thought that it was only because he made a sudden turn of his board that potential tragedy was avoided. The boy was surfing off Matakana island on Monday when the shark launched itself out of the water, just missing him. The boy's father and a friend were surfing with him and the friend who witnessed the incident, described the shark as a "3.5 metre monster out for a kill." It comes off the back of other recent sightings of great whites in the Bay of Plenty. Dr Riley Elliot is a shark scientist who last year put out a warning about the increase in great white sightings in the Bay of Plenty.
