A state of emergency has been extended around Tokyo and three other areas until the end of May to curb a surge in COVID-19 infections, just months before the start of the Olympics. The Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to begin on July 23, but Otago University epidemiologist Professor Michael Baker says the situation in Japan means people will die if they go ahead.
