Albatross are among some of the most loyal and monogamous species in the animal kingdom, but researchers say global warming is contributing to an increase of 'divorces'. Unusually warm water temperatures has meant less food and a harsher environment for the birds which has resulted in fewer chicks surviving and an increase in stress hormones. Researchers say after choosing a partner, only 1-3% would normally separate in search for another, but new statistics have revealed it is now up to 8% of couples splitting. Dr Graeme Elliot, principal science adviser at DoC says dropping population numbers are changing the birds mating patterns, with homosexual couplings happening frequently.
