After two terms as a councillor on the Whakatāne District Council former Green MP Nándor Tánczos is running for the mayoralty
When he left parliament in 2008 Nandor cut off his off his dreadlocks in a purification ceremony, studied sustainability and learnt Te Reo Maori.
Before running successfully for the council in 2016
He is one of seven candidates vying for the top job and wants to make Whakatāne the sustainability capital of New Zealand
