12:13 How will Maori contribute to three waters reforms?

The government's reforms will create four publicly-owned water service entities to ensure every New Zealander has access to affordable, long-lasting drinking, waste and stormwater infrastructure. Maria Nepia is the Executive Director of Three Waters Iwi/Māori at the Department of Internal affairs. She brings extensive experience from her time at the Ngati Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board and says iwi and hapu will have seats on the new entities to be created.

Three years ago Aoteaora marked 250 years since the first encounter between Maori and Captain James Cook and his crew on board HMS Endeavour. Tuia 250 commemorated those first encounters and now a new book is being released that captures the views of tangata whenua in 2019.  Me Anga Whakamua, Facing the Future, explores the impact of Maori-European contact in 1769 and afterwards, through the eyes of several generations of Maori. Janet Hetaraka edited the book and she says Tuia 250 was an opportunity to 'unwrap our history, pick out some bits that have gone bad and make something from our history from what we have.'

12:45 Martin Luther King & Liam Neeson in Maori

Next week a new podcast will be launched called Whakamaori. It features Maori speakers translating famous speeches, movies and writing into Te Reo Maori. For example parts of Martin Luther King's famous 'I have a dream' speech and lines from Liam Neeson's movie Taken. The host and producer is Chey Milne. The first four episodes will be released on April 19 and will then be available weekly on Te Ahi Kaa from April 24.
