Dame Naida Glavish remembers pioneer Dame June Jackson

All week the tributes have flowed for Dame Temuranga June Jackson. She grew up near Te Kuiti and during her life she worked as a cleaner, store detective, head of a security firm, served on the parole board and was the founder and chief executive of the Manukau Urban Maori Authority.

Dame Jackson served in that role from 1986 to 2009, often challenging tribal leaders for a bigger share of resources for Maori living in our biggest city. In 2010 Jackson received the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Maori. Dame Naida Glavish was a close friend and remembers a formidable trail blazer.
