Gardener and navigator Therese Mangos is the co-author of 'Patterns of the Past - Tattoo Revival in the Cook Islands'.
'Patterns of the Past' written together with John Utanga, traces the history and practice of tatatau - tattooing in the Cook Islands through the ancient oral traditions of its people, reports of often repressive early Western visitors and rich archival material. It's a reprint after 12 years with photography by Kirsty Griffin. 'Patterns of the Past' looks at the renaissance of this art form - the first comprehensive examination of Cook Islands tattoo.
Therese Mangos spoke with Susana Lei'ataua from Tamaki Makaurau.
