The Hamilton City Council has just removed the controversial statue of Captain John Hamilton from Civic Square, following a formal request from local iwi Waikato-Tainui.

A local kaumātua, Taitimu Maipi, declared this week he would tear it down at a protest tomorrow.
It comes in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests in the US, where controversial statues have been vandalised and removed.
The Hamilton mayor, Paula Southgate, spoke to Te Aniwa Hurihanganui.
