Privacy lawyer says charity could be liable for compensation

From Midday Report, 12:15 pm on 8 July 2020

A privacy lawyer says the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust charity may have to pay compensation to those whose information was leaked by  to National MP Hamish Walker and, subsequently, the media.

The Privacy Commissioner, John Edwards, says as an MP, the Privacy Act doesn't apply to Mr Walker, and an investigation into how Michelle Boag came to have the information will determine whether she can be charged under that Act.

But those whose details were leaked can take a claim directly to the Privacy Commission.

Māni Dunlop spoke to Kathryn Dalziel, a barrister specialising in privacy law at Christchurch's Walker Street Chambers.
