People are able to book managed isolation places by putting in flight numbers, even when they do not have a ticket for that flight, officials have confirmed.
Rooms have been sitting empty in managed-isolation hotels, because people are 'panic-booking' multiple allocation vouchers they don't need.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment says that since last month up to 16 rooms have been empty each day for that reason, or because people holding vouchers don't board their flights.
MBIE's Deputy Chief Executive Managed Isolation and Quarantine, Megan Main, told our producer, Michael Cropp, they're now letting the system book slightly more rooms than are actually available which has reduced the number of empty rooms to around four or five each day.
