Aged Care industry concerned by plans to slow immigration

From Midday Report, 12:14 pm on 26 February 2021

The Immigration Minister, Kris Faafoi, is warning industries which have relied on migrant workers in the past need to think differently about how to staff their workforce in future.

Covid-19 has brought net migration to a halt, and Mr Faafoi says New Zealand won't be throwing open its doors to the large numbers of new migrants seen in recent years, once it's ready to open the border.

He says the government wanted to up-skill New Zealanders to staff roles usually filled by migrants.

One of those areas with a high proportion of migrant workers is aged care, and the Aged Care Association chief executive,

Simon Wallace, spoke to Māni Dunlop.
