Today marks the 40th anniversary of the first game of the controversial Springboks rugby Tour, which divided the country.
In 1981 South Africa's rugby team was invited to tour Aotearoa, with some New Zealanders seeing it as a tacit endorsement of apartheid, and others insisting that politics had nothing to do with our country's favourite sport
The first game was on Te Tairawhiti - Gisborne soil against Poverty Bay,
The MP for Ikaroa Rawhiti, Meka Whaitiri, was a teenager at the time and went to the game with her whānau.
She spoke to Māni Dunlop.
