A new species of whale has been identified.
It's called the 'Ramari's beaked whale', and it's named after tohunga tohora - or whale expert - Ramari Stewart who helped identify the mammal as a distinct species after one washed ashore on the west coast of Te Waipounamu nearly a decade ago.
Before then, it was thought to be a "True's beaked whale".
Māni Dunlop talks to the lead researcher from Auckland University biologist Dr Emma Carroll about the discovery.
