A survivor of state care who steered groundbreaking research says it has transformed the way the voices of survivors are heard and incorporated into the Royal Commission Inquiry.
The report, by Ihi Research, shows institutionalised government racism has been responsible for the over-representation of Māori in state care.
The independent report was commissioned by the Crown Response to the Abuse in Care inquiry.
The work pulled together data from several sources about Māori in state care between 1950 and 1999.
Paora Crawford-Moyle, a survivor and social worker, who led the research told Māni Dunlop about the significance of having a first of its kind report co-written by survivors.
