A new Medical Journal paper shows New Zealand's health system is hostile and racist toward Maori, perpetuating existing barriers and inequities that have been faced over generations.
The paper reviewed two-dozen articles on the barriers Maori face in the health system.
It found Māori health inequities result from systematic failures in the public health system - where they frequently experience poor communication, racism and multiple road blocks in accessing care.
One of the authors Dr Emma Espiner talks to Māni Dunlop about the findings.
