Floodwaters in Tairāwhiti have closed multiple schools around the region, forcing students to stay home and learn online.
Three schools, Makarika School, Hatea-A-Rangi School and Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Tokomaru, have shifted to remote lessons.
But that's not possible for all students and schools will need a boost to get back on their feet.
New Zealand Educational Institute president Liam Rutherford told Māni Dunlop resources need to be bolstered for the affected schools.
