UN report: Uyghur Muslims abuse claims credible

From Midday Report, 12:49 pm on 1 September 2022

The UN is accusing China of serious human rights violations and says it's reasonable to conclude a pattern of large-scale arbitrary detention occurred.

The report says claims of torture against Uighur Muslims are credible - including medical procedures, sexual violence and forms of waterboarding.

It's estimated up to 1 million Uighurs and other Muslim ethnic minorities have been detained China's Xinjiang region.

China has been fighting tooth and nail to block the release of the report.

The China Director at Human Rights Watch Sophie Richardson spoke to Worldwatch's Perlina Lau.
