Specialist engineers are in Wellington inspecting 50 earthquake damaged buildings this morning.
On the waterfront the BNZ offices, which were badly damaged in the 2013 Seddon earthquake, are safe, but look worse for wear.
The Statistics New Zealand building could be closed for several months.
Photos show damage inside and outside the building, including windows smashed and concrete floor tiles uprooted.
