Microbiologists are warning there could be thousands of cases of a dangerous potentially lethal superbug infection every year if action isn't taken immediately.
An article in the New Zealand Medical Journal out today says there were 46 cases of the superbug CPE last year- up from just one in 2009.
Joshua Freeman is one of the authors of the article and also a clinical microbiologist with the Auckland District Health Board.
He says we need to treat this in the same way as a disease like ebola and have a national response plan.
