Taxpayers will be paying the price for toxic waste from the West Coast Stockton coal mine, which is being sold to private owners, Forest and Bird says.
"The government is essentially giving away the Solid Energy assets just to have more coal mining, and of course that will mean more environmental damage," Forest and Bird chief executive Kevin Hague told Susie Ferguson.
