How safe is your drinking water?
An Insight investigation into drinking water standards has discovered that more than 80,000 people are receiving publicly-supplied water that has failed bacteria standards.
The results do not necessarily mean the water is unsafe, but raise issues over how stringently water safety standards are complied with around the country.
Retiree John Buchanan lives in Waimangaroa, where water has been unsterilised for four years, after a slip damaged the water intake.
He told Insight the difficulty of boiling water means often he doesn't bother.
You can hear more about the safety of NZs drinking water on Insight - 8:09am this Sunday.
