Dentists are calling for an overhaul to emergency dental treatment for the poor, as tens of millions of dollars are spent every year on treatment. Work and Income has given out 400,000 emergency grants over the past six years costing more than $140 million. Dentists say if work is done earlier to prevent gum disease and tooth decay, a lot of money could be saved.
