Workers race to finish SH1 north of Kaikōura

Workers rebuilding State Highway 1 north of Kaikōura are scrambling to finish the job, with just one week left until it reopens. The South Island's main transport corridor was severely damaged in last year's seven-point eight magnitude earthquake. The road south of Kaikōura was reopened months ago, but the route north, which had nine major slips, has involved a massive reconstruction effort and is expected to open next Friday. One of worse slips was at Ohau Point, famous for its seal colony. The site manager, Clark Butcher, told RNZ reporter Logan Church it's been a hard push to the finish line.
