Many respite centres not recording suicide attempts
Many respite centres for mental health patients don't have clinical staff on hand at all times, and eleven of the country's 20 district health boards don't require the centres to record suicide attempts. The Waikato DHB is among those that doesn't collect information on suicide attempts or self harm incidents. Jane Stevens, whose son Nicky killed himself while in a Waikato health unit, is calling for change. She told RNZ's Charlie Dreaver that Nicky's experience of respite care showed the system has been failing for a long time.
