Thousands flee as quake strikes off Alaska
Tsunami sirens sounded and emergency cellphone messages were triggered after a magnitude 7.9 quake struck in the Gulf of Alaska just after midnight local time there on Wednesday. The quake was at a shallow depth of 25km. A major tsunami warning was issued for parts of Alaska and Canada and as far as the US' west coast overnight. Thousands of people on Kodiak Island, the closest population centre to the earthquake, moved to higher ground. Damaging waves did not eventuate and residents have now been allowed to return home. Kayla Des Roaches of radio station KMXT in Kodiak tells Susie Ferguson about the experience.
