Weather: Scores of travellers stranded overnight
About 70 travellers stranded on the West Coast by the extreme weather were put up last night in two welfare centres in Hokitika. A further approximately 90 motorists spent the night in their cars near Fox Glacier awaiting further assistance by helicopter early on Friday morning. Derek Blight of the Westland District Council told RNZ's Karen Brown that those being looked after in Hokitika were caught out by the weather and road closures.
