Medicinal cannabis: Police opposed Health Ministry plan
The Health Minister went ahead with a plan to give the terminally ill full legal protection to use cannabis despite opposition from the police. Legislation now before Parliament means anyone terminally ill who's caught with cannabis will not have to rely on the discretion of the police or the courts. If their case gets to court they can present certification from their practitioner to avoid prosecution. In official advice to the minister some agencies were worried some people could use this defence as a cover to supply illicit cannabis.
