Ex-cyclone Gita tears up Taranaki, South Island

First up the weather, the remnant of Cyclone Gita lashed the upper South Island and Taranaki overnight. It has now moving offshore to the south-east, allowing wind and rain to ease in many areas. In Taranaki and the top of the South Island, thousands of households are still without power after gales felled trees and power lines. Many roads remain closed.
