An Otago University policy which requires scholars to consult local iwi Ngai Tahu before undertaking research has been slammed as outrageous by a prominent biologist. Scientist Bob Brockie wrote in a column that the Treaty of Waitangi had no place in scientific endeavour and was astonished the university had adopted the policy. The university stands by its commitment to partner with iwi, saying consulting with Maori expands an already Western bias. Te Manu Korihi reporter Te Aniwa Hurihanganui has the story.
