People more important than cathedral - Christchurch bishop
The departing Anglican Bishop of Christchurch has criticised the restoration of the Cathedral, questioning if there will be enough money to pay for it. After years of debate the Anglican Synod voted in September to restore the derelict cathedral. The government, Christchurch City Council and The Great Christchurch Buildings Trust all pledged funding to make it happen. Bishop Victoria Matthews has always said the building has no significant heritage and the city's people are more important. She reaffirmed that position during her closing sermon at the weekend.
