The Grey district's long-serving mayor, Tony Kokshoorn, has announced he'll retire from politics next year when his current term ends.
Mr Kokshoorn says the mayoralty is a demanding job and he wants to spend more time with his wife and family.
His 15-year tenure included the Pike River disaster in 2010, when a coal mining explosion killed 29 men.
