'Those are my people' - Kiri Allen at Treaty settlement hikoi
The pressure is coming on the government to clear up the issues of overlapping treaty settlements before it boils over into another controversy like the Foreshore and Seabed. A hikoi of 600 people joined iwi leaders from the Far North, Auckland and Tauranga to protest over the issue of Maori tikanga and cross claims at Parliament on Tuesday. One kaumatua made an impassioned challenge to the Treaty Negotiations Minister, Andrew Little, who later said he understood why the wero was made. The first-term Labour MP, Kiri Allen was on the forecourt with Mr Little as her own iwi walked onto the forecourt. She told RNZ deputy political editor Chris Bramwell the issues are challenging but she hopes there can be a way through.
