Dunedin man, abused as child in Australia, fights for redress
A Dunedin man who was sexually abused as a child in Australia is fighting an up-hill battle for compensation. Darryl Smith cannot get support for abuse that happened while he was a state ward in Queensland because Australian legislation excludes non-residents and citizens from making claims. That has not stopped Mr Smith from contacting the leaders of New Zealand and Australia in a bid to change the National Redress Scheme. Mr Smith told RNZ Dunedin reporter Tess Brunton the situation has reopened old wounds.
