Nauru refugees: 'Australia can't escape this' - Amnesty International
The New Zealand First leader and Foreign Minister Winston Peters has cast doubt on Labour's plans to double the refugee quota, saying his party never agreed to it. The government had already started boosting capacity at the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre in anticipation of an increasing the intake to 1,500 refugees per year. But Mr Peters, speaking in Nauru ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum, says New Zealand First never made a commitment to double the quota, and it has other priorities such as helping the homeless and lifting people out of poverty. Earlier this morning Grant Robertson told Morning Report the government is still focused on that quota despite Mr Peters' statements in Nauru. Meg de Ronde from Amnesty International discusses the issue with Susie Fegurson.
