Race fixing, drugs charges a shock - harness racing boss
Harness Racing New Zealand's chief executive Edward Rennell says he hasn't seen an inquiry of a similar scale to the match-fixing probe that's left the sector reeling. Police say 10 people, some of whom appeared in court yesterday, have now been charged as part of Operation Inca, after a series of raids across the South Island and Manawatu. Those now before the courts are facing a raft of charges including race fixing and possession and supply of drugs. Edward Rennell has been Harness Racing New Zealand's chief executive for the past 21 years. He told RNZ reporter Anneke Smith the Racing Integrity Unit - the independent body governing the code - has done its job but the inquiry has still come as a shock.
