Oil, gas ban: Govt warned of cost up to $23 billion

Government officials have warned the estimated cost to the Crown of banning new oil and gas exploration permits is anywhere between $1.2 billion and $23 billion. In April the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced an end to new offshore permits as part of a political deal between leaders of the coalition, which triggered an outcry from industry leaders who said they weren't consulted.
