New Caledonia votes against independence from France
New Caledonia has voted to stay part of France. More than 174,000 voters were eligible to vote in the first referendum on independence in more than 30 years. Close to 60 percent voted for the status quo. Walter Zweifel from RNZ Pacific is in Noumea. He tells Kim Hill that while it's no surprise that independence was voted down again, it was by a closer margin than expected.
