Deportation of Aboriginal man from Australia 'surreal'
An Aboriginal man facing deportation to New Zealand says Australian immigration authorities are ripping people away from their homeland. Brendan Thoms was born in New Zealand - he has a New Zealand father and his mother is descended from the Gunggarri people of south-west Queensland. He has been in Australia since age seven but doesn't have Australian citizenship. He was jailed for domestic violence, then put in a Brisbane detention centre and now faces being deported. Brendan Thoms told reporter Phil Pennington it's a surreal and crazy situation.
